Virat Kohli won't be able to vote in Lok Sabha elections 2019: No, media spreads rumour against Kohli

  • Share

Summary

Media reports suggesting that Virat Kohli would not be able to cast his vote for the current Lok Sabha as he wanted to vote from Mumbai is false. He is all set to vote on May 12 in Gurugram

Virat Kohli amongst others was appealed by Prime Minister to encourage voters for a greater turnout. However reports are amiss that Indian captain would not be able to exercise his franchise, is the Indian captain destined to meet the same fate of Rahul Dravid because of delay in submission of the form?

What’s happening?

Days after we debunked the rumour around former Indian Captain Rahul Dravid that he won’t be able to vote in this General Election, another rumour of the same nature is doing rounds. This time however the victim is current Indian Captain Virat Kohli. Rahul Dravid is brand ambassador of Election Commission for Karnataka State. Interestingly Virat Kohli also was the brand ambassador of Election Commission in 2014 for Delhi.

Various online portals like Republicworld. com, India Today, Rediff.com have written in their article that he won’t be able to exercise his franchise this General Election.

India Today reported that Virat Kohli wanted to vote from Mumbai, where his wife Anushka Sharma also votes and had applied to vote through the online procedure but the deadline has already passed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 13 from his personal tweeter handle had tagged and appealed Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli to inspire people to vote in larger turnout this General Election.

PM Modi wrote "Dear @msdhoni, @imVkohli and @ImRo45, You are always setting outstanding records on the cricketing field but this time, do inspire the 130 crore people of India to set a new record of high voter turnout in the upcoming elections. When this happens, democracy will be the winner!"

So is the claim true..?

Here is how the story unfolds.

Virat Kohli had applied online to include his name in the electoral list of Worli Mumbai, where he also has a residence there this time. However, by the time he submitted the letter the deadline had March 30 had already passed. Hence his name doesn’t appear in the electoral list of Worli Mumbai.

However the claim is not completely true, Virat Kohli today 28 April at 11:14 Am using his Instagram handle posted snapshots of his voter id card with the caption ‘All set to vote this General Election from Gurugram on 12 May’.

We in order to find the fact about him exercising his franchise this General Election checked his name in the electoral list using his EPIC (Electors Photo Identity Card) National Voter's Service site. This is what we found:

The '360' video explains the procedure.

From the image above it became obvious that Kohli will be able to exercise his franchise this General Election from the Gurugram, Haryana.
